Cannabis sativa, usually referred to as cannabis or hemp, contains a substance called cannabidiol (CBD). The United States has approved one specific type of CBD as a medication for seizures.
The Cannabis sativa plant contains more than 80 cannabinoids, also referred to as psychoactive substances. The component of cannabis most well known as THC is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. However, hemp, a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant with very little THC present, is where CBD is obtained. Different from THC’s effects, CBD appears to have some impacts on some brain chemicals.
CBD in a prescription form is used to treat epilepsy (epilepsy). In addition to these purposes, CBD is also used to treat pain, anxiety, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, and a host of other illnesses, but there isn’t any solid scientific proof to back these claims.
The US can now legally sell hemp and hemp-derived products thanks to laws passed in 2018. Not all CBD products manufactured from hemp are, however, legal. Since CBD is a recognized prescription medication, it is illegal to add it to food or dietary supplements. CBD is restricted to “cosmetic” products only. However, there are still CBD products available on the market with nutritional supplement labels.
Is CBD permitted?
The majority of the United States enjoys easy access to CBD, despite the fact that its actual legal status has been up for debate. With different degrees of limitation, CBD is allowed in all 50 states. The FDA loosened the rules in December 2015 to allow researchers to undertake CBD experiments. It became practically difficult to keep CBD illegal once the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized hemp in the US; it would be analogous to legalizing oranges but keeping orange juice unlawful.
The Controlled Substances Act, which makes it illegal to possess drugs, was amended by the Farm Bill to exclude all goods produced from hemp, including CBD. In essence, this means that, despite being the same molecule, CBD is legal if it originates from hemp but illegal if it comes from cannabis (marijuana). Currently, a lot of people buy CBD online without a medical marijuana card, which is acceptable in the majority of states.
The proof of cannabidiol’s health advantages
The best scientific evidence supports the use of CBD for treating some of the cruellest childhood epileptic syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which often don’t react to anti-seizure drugs. CBD has been promoted for a wide range of health conditions. Numerous studies have shown that CBD can both lessen and, in some circumstances, completely halt seizures. The first cannabis-derived medication approved by the FDA for these diseases is Epidiolex, which contains CBD.
Self-reports from users and human research indicate that CBD may also be beneficial for:
- Anxiety Studies and clinical studies are looking at the widely reported ability of CBD to lessen anxiety.
- Insomnia. According to studies, CBD may assist with both getting to sleep and staying asleep.

According to an animal study published in the European Journal of Pain, using CBD topically may help reduce arthritis-related pain and inflammation. The difficult-to-treat inflammatory and neuropathic pain may be inhibited by CBD, according to additional studies.
- Addiction. According to certain human study, there are some circumstances where CBD can assist reduce cravings for drugs like heroin and tobacco. It may also aid in reducing cravings for alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and stimulants, according to animal models of addiction.
